because of reasons… #YesAllWomen

If you don’t live under a rock, you are aware that last Friday, a young man killed 6 people and then himself because women wouldn’t show interest in him. Now my local radio station in Germany was trying to explain to me today how this raised an interesting debate about gun control in the US. Again. But I digress. The discussion wether to restrict access to guns always comes up after a shooting but things never change. What is so much more interesting this time is the fallout on social media that has clogged (and I used hat term as a compliment) my Twitter timeline since Sunday afternoon.

I am, of course, talking about women sharing their feelings and experiences with the #YesAllWomen hashtag. I slept through a lot of the good parts because stupid time zones but there are some of my friends I saw and that resonated with me. And it took em a while to register how deeply rooted some things are in my daily life. Some things, like texting friends what I’m wearing and where I’m going at night have never come up for me, mostly because the few times that I go out, I have a guy who’s over 1,80 m tall by my side.

Nevertheless was I raised to be afraid. Afraid of strangers and to never walk home alone in the dark. I still remember the first time I took the bus after it was dark. It actually wasn’t late but since it was winter, it got dark early and it had just started snowing. Just knowing there was a complete stranger a couple of meters behind me because he obviously lived in my neighbourhood made me quicken my steps because you never know. He could have easily been a rapist. It’s sad that we have to assume these things and to always be prepared. In general, I can still call myself lucky. I’ve lived a rather sheltered life, so to say. I have never been assaulted or raped.

There are too many stories out there to even cover. I understand that I am far from the only person to do this but I felt the need to address this on my blog because it has been with me all day. So here are some tweets I came across over the last day or two.

These are just a few of my favourites. The tag is full of so many more stories, just like Neil Gaiman said. I find it interesting that we are finally talking about this because too many people still consider all of the above normal and like we can’t change it. I say bullshit. There needs to be a change in how we address this so keep your stories coming!

Yep, that’s what it’s been doing to me since Sunday afternoon.
