What originally spiked this post was a Twitter conversation I had with Anju about travelling. I wrote part of this post in May and never published it. When I read a post over on Short Stories and Sustenance about his dream travel destinations I remembered this little thing I wrote before (that has now been updated because a lot has happened during the summer). What better way to celebrate a Traveling Thursday than by talking about where I want to travel to next?!
My oldest friend Nok and me wanted to go on a backpacking trip to Costa Rica after graduating from university but we didn’t exactly graduate at the same time, and she left to spend a couple of months in Chile last week. So that’s not going to happen sometime soon. Also, as much as I like her, I’m afraid our traveling styles vary drastically from each other. Nevertheless, Costa Rica has been on my travel list for ages now and I will go there.
I probably shouldn’t get started on listing all the places I want to see but here I go. The east coast of the USA has been on the top of my list for ages. I even have sketched out where exactly I want to go and it would take me a while I guess because I want to start around Boston and make my way down to Florida. Maybe I need to chop that into multiple trips though because (a) it takes a while and (b) it’s expensive to do it all at once.
Then there is Costa Rica, of course, but I don’t speak any Spanish so it would be better to go there with Nok because she speaks Spanish. Oh, and then I guess it would be cool to visit India. Maaaaybeee, watching The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel did sweeten that. But also, I want to see the Taj Mahal, buy a pretty colourful traditional clothing thing (sorry, all I’m coming up with right now is Sarong and that’s another country) and go somewhere they speak English, hehe. Also, Anju said her family would take good care of me, so, how could I pass such an opportunity when I actually know someone local??
Oh, and I always wanted to go to Africa. I know it’s so cliché but I’d love to go on a Safari which is not like it was for Tania Blixen but still. Kenya, Nairobi…the nature sounds impressive and it would be awesome. And last but not least Australia and New Zealand. A friend did that last year and I was really jealous. Well, I get jealous every time someone I know goes off traveling the world but still! Also, they speak English down under which is always a perk while traveling for me, especially when I’m more or less alone.
And then I think about traveling inside of Europe which I haven’t done enough. Well, I’ve been to Spain, but that was a long time ago, as was Italy. I visited the Netherlands when my uncle lived there. Northern Europe is more familiar with the exception of Iceland (which is a place I need to go but it’s also quite expensive to go there). I haven’t been in any eastern european countries aside from Latvia, hell, I haven’t even been to eastern Germany aside from Berlin. Never been to France but bestfriendboy and me talked about going there and I’m pretty sure we will visit Paris sometime next year. And Portugal, Ireland, Belgium and Switzerland are empty spots on my travel map as well.
Even though it’s not that far away, well everything of Europe is not far away when you live in the middle of it, I haven’t been to London and I really want to go there. First of all, they speak my language, and I could see Wicked there in its original, if it still runs, which I’m not sure of. All of my friends have been there except me which is kind of depressing. Again, bestfriendboy and I wanted to go to London during the summer but then he got a paying gig in Oslo, I went to Edinburgh and Sweden and time got away from us.
My wanderlust knows no bounds, I can’t wait to pack up my bags again and board a plane to another country. I’m not entirely sure what of the places I listed above will be next because I want to go everywhere, possibly right now. First, I have to start working though and see how my 20 vacation days will play out, especially when I’m also doing theatre in the summer. At least the smaller destinations like Paris, London or Brussels seem more approachable than Australia or the US.
The more I think about it, the more places I add to this ever growing list of places. Like, I really want to go and see the Easter Islands and visit Canada again. There are just so many places. I will just wait and see what opportunity presents itself next and go there.
How about you? What are your travel dream destinations?
