It is really embarrassing how long it took me to get through this book but I detoured a lot of other stories. Never mind. What counts, is that I made it and can start a new book.
Much has been said about The Hobbit and it is a great read but to be honest, I liked The Lord of the Rings better. I know, I know The Hobbit is a children’s book but the prose was just better and more demanding in LotR, sorry. This is not even real criticism but I need to say it. The end felt a little bit rushed to me, suddenly Smaug was shot and I was prepared for an epic long battle but nothing happened except fighting Orks and that was it. I don’t know, it’s just that I imagined the ending to be different, there to be a different kind of fight.
I love the characters, mostly Bilbo and Gandalf, the elves and some of the dwarfs but not all of them. I don’t care too much for Thorin, not even sure why. I love the Shire and I wish I could live in a Hobbit-hole, they look so cozy and beautiful.
The only thing I was really upset about was at the end, no not the character deaths, I knew they were coming and they didn’t even make me that sad, no. What I absolutely hated was the mention of Christmas. I’m pretty sure this is a problem of the translation but nevertheless it bothered me immensely. Why would a Hobbit know or care about Christmas, there is no Christianity in Middle Earth, so why go there? I just don’t understand this. Next thing your telling me, they celebrate Easter and the resurrection of Jesus Christ as well. THIS IS FANTASY!
Now, I cannot wait for the two other movies to come out. I already saw An Unexpected Journey, fortunately I managed to read ahead enough to actually cover the movie and I really like it. Still not as good as LotR but I’m afraid that is a hard standard to be measured against. The changes in the movie didn’t bother me that much, I was just confused but that’s what you get for having the book so fresh on your mind.
When young Bilbo first appeared on screen I couldn’t help but turn right to best friend boy who was sitting next to me because OMG Bilbo is Arthur Dent. Arthur is Bilbo!!! My mind is still not over this. Don’t get me wrong, the casting is perfect but I cannot not see Arthur from The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy every time I see Bilbo. I didn’t even realise until now that Martin Freeman is also Dr. Watson on Sherlock. Now I’m really confused…
