30 Days of Books – Day 12

A book you used to love but don’t anymore

Previously: A book you hated

Love is a strong word I sometimes throw around too carelessly while talking about inanimate objects so the book I chose for today was never really loved by me, but I liked it very much before school ruined it.

What I’m talking about is The Perfume by Patrick Süskind. I first read it out of curiosity, because it was supposed to be a good read, which it probably is when you don’t spend weeks upon weeks dissecting every last bit of the writing and metaphors and whatnot in German class.

It’s a well written story that is quite unique and not your standard crappy novel but something about the main character, Grenouille, started to annoy the hell out of me after a while. My best memory of this book is best friend boy referring to an episode at the end of the novel as the ‘buoyant market place scene’ where all the people are happily taking part in an orgy in the town square. Other than that, I’m over this book. Maybe if I read it again without the pressure of analysing it to pieces, I would like it again but right now it’s the book I once liked but don’t anymore.

  • Haven’t read the book, but I have heard it’s very good … seen the movie – I liked it very much, even if the critics didn’t.

    • It’s really not bad at all and I can’t remember if I saw the movie or not. Just the movie version of Grenouille is better looking than my imagined version.
